Celebrate Recovery Awareness Month and join Options Recovery Services in honoring Dr. Davida Coady in a Walk for Recovery – a three-mile, 90 minute route that visits significant downtown Berkeley landmarks: Old City Hall where, with the late Father Bill O’Donnell, Dr. Coady lobbied for start-up funding; Stiles Hall, Options’ first fiscal sponsor; recovery residences on Haste Street and Addison Street and Options’ current recovery services sites at the City Hall Annex and Veterans Building. (A shorter 20 minute walk is also available).
Dr. Davida Coady (4/15/38 – 5/3/18) spent three decades combining medical care with public health as a first responder to humanitarian crises across the globe (including Biafra, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India and Central America) – only to return home to do the same with addiction treatment among Berkeley’s homeless population. 21 years later, Options Recovery Services provides outpatient treatment in three locations in Berkeley and Oakland – and is in the process of setting up another site in E. Oakland and San Leandro – operates 10 recovery residences, and, since 2006, has trained several hundred inmates in the California prison system to become certified addiction treatment counselors.
In the words of Options’ Executive Director Thomas Gorham – Davida’s spouse and one of Options’ earliest clients: “Davida founded Options and devoted her life to helping those who struggle with chronic homelessness, poverty, crippling addiction and associated physical and mental health issues to transform themselves into clean, sober, and productive members of society. I hope you can join me.”
Options is grateful to the Berkeley Police Association for sponsoring this event.
